EICS responds to an ELT search mission

Cedar Rapids, IA. Monday December 29th. A call was received from Col Kellogg informing the EICS to get a Ground Team ready for an ELT search. Cadets c/Capt Chris Oglesby, C/SSgt Thomas Glavan, and c/A1C Katelyn Mishmash and Senior Members Capt Brad Oglesby, 1Lt Brian Mishmash and 2Lt Francisco Molina participated in the mission.

The Ground team located the aircraft in an Cessna 172 parked at an Eastern Iowa Airport hanger and silenced the ELT.

ELTs are Emergency Locator Transmitters that emit an Emergency signal on an specific radio band automatically on impact by the use of a "G" switch or by manual activation. With ELT’s, CAP air and ground Search and Rescue teams may more easily pinpoint the exact location of downed Aircraft. ELT’s are now also enhanced by Satellite detection.

ELT´s like this one are mounted in private aircraft. If an aircraft crashes, this device emits a signal that can be tracked by CAP search and rescue teams.
