Cedar Rapids, IA - On a very chilly and sunny Saturday morning in late fall, cadet members of the East Iowa Cadet Squadron met with pilots from the Cedar Rapids Senior Squadron and Burlington Composite Squadron at the Eastern Iowa Airport for Orientation Flights.
The pilots provided short training briefings to the cadets, followed by hands-on demonstrations and instructions on how to complete a pre-flight check of the aircraft. Cadets each received approximately 45 minutes of flight training before returning to the airport for a post flight briefing and receipt of a flight certificate commemorating the event.
Five powered training flights are provided to each cadet member under the age of 18 as part of Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Programs. In addition to powered flights, cadets are also provided 5 glider orientation flights. The flights are funded by the US Air Force at no cost to the cadet members. The flights teach cadets about aircraft safety, maintenance, and operation.
When asked about the experience, C/A1C Horst responded briefly but exited, "it was great!".
